How to combine names for couples
Try first names, surnames and familiar nicknames, then build a small shared shortlist without forcing an awkward combination.

To combine names for a couple, start with the forms both people actually use. Keep a recognizable part from each, compare both orders, and choose something both people like saying. Equal numbers of letters are optional; recognition and agreement matter more.
The couple ship name generator gives you editable letter combinations. It does not choose a legal surname, predict compatibility, or establish the meaning of a new word.
Start with three source pairs
Before generating dozens of variants, decide which inputs are worth trying. Use this small worksheet:

You can also mix a first name and a surname if both people like that form. There is no obligation to make every pair symmetrical.
This is more than a theoretical fallback. In a public naming discussion about two original characters, the author disliked initial combinations but responded positively to a suggested surname-based blend. That is one person’s preference, not proof that surnames always work better.
Compare one join at a time
For our invented pair Milo and Luna, start with Miluna, made from Mi + luna. Keep it as your reference candidate while you test:
- Milna: keep more of Milo and less of Luna.
- Lunilo: reverse the order and use a different ending.
- Milu: keep the beginning of both names.
To make Milu, enter Milo and Luna, open Adjust the join, select Beginning for both names, and keep two letters from each. The editor exposes those choices directly so you do not need to regenerate until a particular cut appears.
Say each candidate in the same sentence. Then look away and try spelling it from memory. If the spelling only makes sense with the source colors visible, you may need a clearer join.
Handle long names and punctuation
Long inputs offer many possible cuts, but most combinations will not deserve a place on your shortlist. Start with the familiar spoken name, then keep the sound that identifies it. The Short · up to 8 filter can reduce the list; it is a length filter, not a judgment that short names are better.
Accents remain in generated pieces. Spaces, apostrophes and hyphens are removed inside a compact blend, while the source label retains what you entered. If removing punctuation makes a name unrecognizable, try a shorter familiar form rather than accepting a misleading spelling.
The tool uses a simple letter heuristic. It cannot know where every language’s syllable boundaries belong. Your own pronunciation check is part of the process.
Make a shared shortlist
Save three options with genuinely different qualities: perhaps the most recognizable, the easiest to say, and the one with a private connection. Sending ten nearly identical spellings often makes the choice harder.
Use a result link when you want the other person to see the exact selected pieces. The link includes your source names, so treat it as information you are choosing to share. Use nicknames if you want to keep full names private. A downloaded card also shows the sources.
Favorites are stored only in the browser where you saved them. Export the list before clearing browser data or moving to another device. A shared link restores one result; it does not transfer your whole shortlist.
If you prefer a shared reference
A couple nickname does not have to contain either name. You might choose two symbols associated with a shared interest or memory and compare them in Concept names mode. Use words you choose yourselves: the tool cannot infer a private story from personal names.
Keep a private nickname private if that suits it best. If you plan to use it as a public account name or hashtag, search its existing uses first. A generated suggestion is not an availability check.
